Internal capsule of the brain contains the pathways which allow the cerebral cortex to communicate with the brainstem and spinal cord. This medical illustration shows all the major structures within the internal capsule and surrounding region. The pyramidal tract is highlighted. It consists of motor fibers originating in the cerebral cortex that travel to the spinal cord through the brainstem. The lenticulostriate arteries (branches of the middle cerebral artery) are small blood vessels that provide blood flow to most of the subcortical region.
